I finished the transition with my 1/4 sheet Palm sander. Final thickness on the headstock was 1/2". I also forgot to mention, I drilled the tuner holes for 11/32". This will take the majority of the tuners on the market. You can go basic tuners for $25 or up to $70 for Planet Waves Tuners which are pretty slick.
